Photo Credit: Will Scullin The backstory For a long time, I was happy with the old JobMob look, or JobMob v1. My friend Fitore had helped me with the original design, and I thought she did a great job, as I mentioned on the Credits page. I liked the soft gradient of the logo â€" trendy back then in 2007 â€" and the color highlights against a minimalist white blue layout. And I received mostly compliments during the first few years (if you're a designer, you're probably snickering by now) as the site grew and became popular. In late 2010, I hired a project manager to evolve JobMob into a membership site, and it became clear very quickly that the new project could only succeed if the original design was heavily reworked or replaced entirely. However, that project was frozen a few months later, and the original design survived. In late 2012, I began working on a new job search-oriented Internet startup. Early on, I met Efrat Ben Yehuda, a Tel Aviv-based User Experience (UX) and Usability Expert. Among other things,I hired her to audit JobMob v1's design and her report convinced me that sooner than later, JobMob had to be modernized. Our startup was frozen in Spring 2014 and the next logical step was to think more seriously about JobMob's future again.eval The logo The turning point came when Bartek Miszkiel of the Emske creative studio reached out to me last September. A likable guy, we quickly came to an arrangement where they would design a new JobMob logo. But I didn't just want a new logo; I wanted a logo that you and the rest of the JobMob community would have a stake in. After a few conversations, they started working on new JobMob logo concepts, and I asked you to vote on them: eval Which logo concept do you like best? Concept 1 - the comment bubble logo (66%, 105 Votes) Concept 2 - the suitcase logo (25%, 39 Votes) Concept 3 - the crowd logo (9%, 14 Votes) Started: October 2, 2014 @ 5:27 pmTotal Voters: 158 Together with all the comments and suggestions you gave me, Team Emske took the vote winner and retouched it to create some variations, and I asked you to vote on those too: Round 1 Winner (47%, 28 Votes) Round 2 Concept 1 - Double Bubble (29%, 17 Votes) Round 2 Concept 2 - Inner Bubble (19%, 11 Votes) Round 2 Concept 3 - Flipped Bubble (7%, 4 Votes) Started: October 21, 2014 @ 3:35 pmTotal Voters: 59 After that and still more feedback â€" you guys have been great! â€" Emske made some final tweaks and completed the new JobMob logo you see here above. This is how they described it: In this logo concept, we tried to keep the bubble from the current JobMob logo. Why? Because we think that you have a strong brand and a lot of people associate JobMob with these comment bubbles, and creating something 100% different is not good move. In this design our main assumptions are: simplicity, professionalism, reference to the current logo and little dose of humour. The logo is simple with the bubble being ‘mobbed’ between the “M” and “b” letters. Why I love the new logo First of all, I really enjoyed the design process, both with Emske, you, other designers and non-designers who gave feedback. I wanted a logo that might be different but still had a recognizable connection to its earlier cousin. It had to be a logo that was simple, but also clever, and Emske delivered with the comment bubble-in-a-bubble, signifying discussions. Ultimately, you want a logo that correctly represents your brand, and Emske summed it up for JobMob perfectly: “professional… with a little dose of humour.” But that's not all. Emske also surprised me with something unexpected. They conceived the new JobMob logo using the Golden Ratio (F), which I learned in high school as the Golden Section, the “divine proportion” that occurs frequently in nature and has been copied often in art (Salvador Dalí), architecture (the Parthenon) and so much more. Other logos that follow it include Apple, Twitter and Pepsi. This makes the math geek in me proud: Very cool! The theme My plan was to use the logo to set the tone for an eventual JobMob redesign. Although the final logo wasn't yet complete when we rang in 2015, the voting gave me a clear direction. I researched WordPress theme trends, recent design best practices, the free vs. premium theme debate, and more. Inspiration also came from websites such as 8JGBC sponsor Quicksprout.com and Videofruit's blog. I wanted a theme that was simple and clean yet flexible, lightweight and fast yet with certain features built-in so I would need fewer code customizations and plugins. I later decided that paid support was important too because even if I have the tech skills to fix any eventual issues myself, I didn't want unforeseen circumstances to force me to lose focus on whatever project I'm working on when they happen. After testing over a dozen themes from almost as many theme directories and vendors, I settled on the Schema theme from MyThemeShop as the base for JobMob v2. Although it only took a few minutes to download and install, I spent a few days playing around with it while being a heavy support forums visitor â€" where reps would respond within hours â€" until I was truly happy with the final result. Contrast and compare: Why I love the new design Aside from the fact that I was tired of staring at the same look, day in and day out for 8 years… The clean look makes it easy to focus on the content The site is now fully responsive, and works great on your tablet or smartphone (try it) JobMob now uses the latest web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and SVG images JobMob now uses classic web technologies that it didn't even have before, such as threaded comments. Woohoo! Based on the modern Schema WordPress theme that is regularly updated, it's now much easier (or even just possible) for me to add new features And with others planned, I've already added one major new feature that you can try out, but more details on that soon. Or it could refer to a product/business that you want to sell and how your skills fit around this. You can even use a personal brand to help market your own name and products; for example, if you personalise your business to a name like Jones Burgers, etc. What skills do you have and how can you market them? The term skill does not necessarily refer to the skills you pick up in education but the skills you have built up through life experience. Are you a good communicator, team player etc.? You may be a graduate who wants a particular internship but why are you so special, compared to all the competition? If you want to create a brand for yourself, here are few factors to bear in mind: Have a LinkedIn profile â€" This will help employers and other companies see what you have to offer and give them a chance to get an overview of your experience and things you have achieved, both professionally and academically. Network professionally â€" If there is a company you are interested in or want to ask someone a question, network with them professionally. You could do this via LinkedIn or Twitter or ask for their email or contact number, etc. Ask for advice from renowned experts â€" If there are people who you see have established themselves, why not contact them? Tell them a little bit about yourself and ask for advice, if you think appropriate. If you are starting a business, why is it unique? Make sure you do some market research about other businesses similar to yours. What makes yours extra special? Is it an online business, are you selling a service that no one else is? If so, is there a market for it, etc.? If you are looking for work, why is your personal brand different? â€" If you are using your personal brand to help you find a job, think about what you have achieved and what makes you stand out from the crowd. Were you actively involved in something at university, like a society or a club? If not, have you done volunteering or an internship what did you learn? Also, why should a potential employer consider you? Have you used your time as an unemployed graduate wisely, i.e. non-paid work experience, etc.? Show enthusiasm and passion Whatever you are interested in pursuing whether it’s starting your own business, getting a job with a particular employer, or securing an important internship show enthusiasm for it. A potential employer should be able to see you have a passion for your dream career. Sometimes starting a blog or a website can help exhibit your passion. So, if, for example, you love art and want to be an artist or a graphic designer, show what you have to offer on your blog. Remember personal branding is about your image, so make sure what you have online is professional. It won’t help if your pictures of going out partying end up on Twitter. You need to create a positive image of yourself show that youre serious about seeking employment. If you use Twitter, makes sure tweets are not involving any criticism. If a potential company isn’t interested in you, don’t mention it to the whole world, as this won’t create a good image for other potential employers. Move on from this.
